Technology Plan Outline

Here is an outline of the Technology Plan.

Staff competencies assessment




1. Executive Summary
The summary would include a synopsis of the plan’s major recommendations and conclusions, basically the highlights.


2. Background Information
Provide an overview of the library, its mission, and people served.

Some things that could be included:
Library Overview (i.e. history)
Mission Statement
Technology Vision
How the Plan Was Developed
Technology Plan Team Members

3. Current State of Technology
What technology is in place and how it serves the library’s patrons and staff. An inventory will be appended. Items we might include are:
• Databases and Information Resources
• Servers
• PC Workstations
• Integrated Library System modules
• Network Equipment and Software (hubs, routers, etc.)
• Telephone system
• Staff skills and competence levels

4. The Technology Plan
Specific goals, with objectives and actions, for accomplishing those goals.

Including
 Technology Vision:
 Goals and Objectives for Improving Services (Clear goals and a realistic strategy for using telecommunications and information technology to improve library services)
 Technology Needs: Include an assessment of hardware, software, and other services that will be needed to improve library services).
 Action Plan
 Staff Training/Professional Development Strategy:

5. Timeline
 When should the plan begin? What will be done first, second and third, etc.?


6. Budget
. Consider:
• Computer hardware and peripheral equipment
• Application and network software (e.g. timing software)
• Infrastructure (e.g. data points, cabling)
• External databases and systems
• Training
• Support and maintenance
• Include initial costs, recurring costs and additional costs for each goal.


7. Evaluation
Should include an evaluation process that enables the library to monitor progress toward the specified goals and make changes in response to new developments and opportunities as they arise.

Could include consideration of:
 How frequently will the plan be updated? Who will be responsible?
 How will we determine if the technology plan was successful in meeting the stated goals? Possible e.g. Interview/survey staff, students, faculty; measuring progress made towards the benchmarks you set out in your goals; observations
 Were there any unexpected outcomes or benefits to having the technology in place?
 What goals and objectives of the technology plan were not meet? Why? Are there ways to overcome these barriers?

Tech Team Introduction

Members: Kathleen, Jayson, Sylva, Thomas, Wendy

Purpose:
  • to ensure regular communication between those members of staff concerned with the day to day managment and operation of technology in the Library.
  • to develop a Technology Plan that will provide the Library with a picture of the current state of all aspects of technology in the Library (including: hardware, software, staffing, budget, etc.) and to provide a road-map of what we would like to accomoplish over the next 2-3 years.
  • to communicate with staff throughout the Library on technology related issues
  • to try out new types of technology and new ways of using technology in an effort to improve our services.
